1. To provide students with opportunities to develop bioinformatics skills, including:
   • finding and using biological information on the Internet
   • building and maintaining databases of biological information
   • writing queries using Structured Query Language (SQL)
   • creating web-based interfaces to biological databases
   • integrating local databases with other networked information sources
2. To provide research groups with working databases in order to:
   • aid in the research enterprise
   • leverage additional value from existing data
3. To provide the public with access to relevant UMass life sciences collections data in order to:
   • support research at other institutions
   • support the mission of public service
